Windows 98/me was the last operating system that supported the 'isa pnp scsi' card.newer OS will sttill allow you to work but with a pci adaptec 2930/ 2940 card.They will NOT require a card driver at all,it may not work with the original software. But something like Vuescan ( if supported by the scanner) should work.,an alternative is to use the scanner with an older computer.even as far back as windows 98se ( thpough it lacks support for most newer hardware susch as bideo cards)and is limited on the www- many sites just do not work.,Windows 2000/xp with the pci scsi card and decent usb support would be better.Even an older laptop. As last year's laptop is often considered 'disposable'I would strongly suggest dell as a dell restore disk will eliminate the hassle of other brand pc's a dell restore disk will install XP on a new hard drive no issues. As part of the installation you have the option to install the Nikon drivers. Do NOT intall the Nikon drivers; uncheck the box. Nikon Scan will use the VueScan drivers to access the Coolscan V.This installation works perfectly on my machine which runs Windows 7 x64. Even the TWAIN interface that allows me to scan directly into Photoshop (CS5) works. I found that Brooks's method didn't work for me. The method that worked for me was some editing a ini file or something. It works now, but it's buggy with my CS 4000 on Win7 x64 Pro.

Vuescan otoh works flawlessly.When I start Nikon Scan software, it tells me I have a hardware error, if I ignore I can preview it but now and then it gives me color casts, thru rebooting and restarting the scanner or software it may go away momentarily. To me it means that I need to expect that I would stop half way thru scanning series of films. I haven't got Vuescan (just the demo) so I just scan the odd frame when I need a higher reso, I usually use my Epson V700 for low reso just so I can preview the images in Lightroom. But IMO, the Epson provides better color at least straight out of the box (for me). Even when the CS does work, the color at least needs some custom settings.
